“You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them”. ~Desmond Tutu
Holidays are often a mixed bag. The happiness of gathering families and the fun of holiday traditions, coupled with the stress and anxiety of gift giving. How much is too much? What if there isn’t enough? This season, along with giving the coveted Wii Consoles or Zhu Zhu Hamsters, let us all endeavor to give gifts that will adorn our children on the inside--Traditions and activities that teach values and build character.
We must admit, there is a special joy that comes from watching a child open a long awaited special gift. However, the immediate pleasure the gift provides often fades quickly. Special moments with your children that promote your family values never lose favor and plant seeds that are sure to reap a bountiful harvest as your children grow into adulthood.
Consider incorporating these character-building activities into your holiday traditions this year:
1. Discuss your religious beliefs. Children are never too young or too old to hear (and discuss) the stories detailing your religious beliefs and why this season is important to your family. For little ones, read stories, dress up and act out key scenes, or create dioramas.
2. Involve your children in charity or service projects. Volunteering as a family is a powerful way to teach the importance of giving to a child. Participate in an Angel Tree or food basket project, give to a homeless shelter, or make cookies or sandwiches for a local soup kitchen.
3. Plan a special family day or short trip for just the immediate family. The holidays are perfect for memorable family bonding activities. During the holiday break, plan a family fun day at home with games, movies, baking, etc. Leave the laundry and phone calls behind! If possible, plan a quick overnight trip at a nearby tourist attraction or even a local hotel with a great indoor pool.
Take time to just relax and enjoy your glorious gifts--your children.
